LAB1201 Review – Bahasa Indonesia 1

Taken in AY19/20 Sem 1

Lecturer/Tutor: Prof Johanna Wulansari Istanto, (Ibu) Novi

Workload: 1x 2h weekly lecture, 1x 2h weekly tutorial, 1x weekly Homework, 2x Written Tests, 1x Oral Exam, 1x Project Night

You need to buy 2 books from Co-op. Can’t remember if it was $21 or $48 or something. Forgive me for the weird numbers that just popped into my head. Anyway, this was quite a refreshing mod. It’s always refreshing to try a new language.

Content: Well, you’ll learn basic Indonesian. There’ll be chances to try speaking. Some people would have some prior knowledge, be it hanging out with friends who speak Bahasa, or with foreign helpers, etc. So I feel that the playing ground is not as level as it felt with Thai 1.

Weekly Homework: I think it was three. It’s not too difficult because you can always refer to your textbook. For listening comprehension, there are recordings being made. As with language modules, the type of questions that appear will be Close Passages, Dialogues, rearranging of words, etc.

Written Tests: Exactly the same as your weekly homework. Just that there’s more questions, you have only 2 hours, and it isn’t open book. The bell curve here seems steeper than Thai, but this is only a sample size of 1 semester. And it’s just my opinion. So 2 written tests = 1 midterms and 1 finals. Technically, it isn’t called finals because it happens before Reading Week. SO it’s just a test. Yep thats the way it works.

Oral Exam: You will pair up with one other person. Then you’ll have some conversations with each other and also the teacher. Lots of errrrr ahhhh errrr which is normal I think.

Project Night: This is a fun thing! First yall will first come first serve try to join one of the project groups in Week 4? There are different projects. You can choose between Indonesian dance, food, costumes, musical instruments, and more! Then in like Week 13 yall will present a performance to everyone in this mod. There will be specific dates and times outside the LAB1201 schedule which is already set for certain projects. So eg if the dance practice is set on this timeslot which clashes with your other class, then too bad you have to choose something else. But wow this is really fun!! Can see how the different aspects of Indonesian culture being showcased. It says this is graded, but I think it’s just based on your attendance and participation in those sessions outside of the LAB1201 schedule. Just attend and you’ll get free marks.
